As every January, during the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, convention centers were filled with exciting news in the field of new technologies. Several AR and VR projects seized the attention of the participants. The event showcased augmented reality-enhanced cars and various types of glasses and headsets for augmented, virtual, and mixed reality experiences. We want to show you the most interesting products revealed during the 2024 exhibition.
Qualcomm XR2+ Gen 2 Chip:
Although technically unveiled before CES, the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2 chipset captured the attention of the attendants during the event. The powerful successor to the XR2+ Gen 1, found in the Meta Quest Pro, will be featured in the next generation of hradsets, including the Samsung VR developed in collaboration with Google. Key specifications include support for 4.3k screens, 8 times superior AI performance, and 2.5 times better GPU performance compared to the previous model, support for Wi-Fi 7, and full-color mixed reality support.
Asus AirVision M1 Glasses:
Asus presented AirVision M1, AR glasses designed to function as a wearable AR display. These glasses need to be connected to a compatible phone or computer via a USB-C port. The resolution is full-HD, and although details such as availability and launch date are still unknown, they aim to offer an affordable alternative for those who wish to purchase AR headsets.
Xreal Air 2 Ultra:
Xreal unveiled Air 2 Ultra, smart glasses that function as a spatial computer thanks to an integrated camera that allows the device to track the user’s hands and identify real-world objects with which virtual elements can interact. However, these glasses require an external power source to work, and the list of compatible devices revealed so far includes only the Samsung Galaxy S22, S23, and a yet-to-be-released “custom unit.” Nevertheless, the price remains competitive compared to many products from their competitors.
BMW AR Experience:
BMW prepared a mixed reality experience for cars using the Xreal Air 2 smart glasses. Although presented as a simple prototype, the XR experience showed the potential of integrating augmented reality and mixed reality in the automotive sector in order to enhance the driving experience and implement safety features. AR allows the driver to receive warnings about road conditions, potholes, stops, and the electric vehicle’s charge.
Sony XR Enterprise Visor:
Sony, in collaboration with Siemens, announced an XR visor designed to optimize business processes. The goal is to bring more production phases, especially design and prototyping, into the Metaverse. The device allows companies to produce and analyze 3D models of their projects, enabling them to identify any critical aspects even before creating prototypes in the real world. The uniqueness of this visor lies in the controllers: one is a traditional VR controller, the other is a ring. This way, the users have a free hand andthey can interact comfortably with the objects around them.
In conclusion, CES 2024 showcased an exciting array of innovations in the field of augmented and virtual reality. These emerging technologies are merging into many different areas, promising significant improvements in entertainment, business productivity, and driving experiences. The event highlighted the rapid evolution of AR and VR, pointing towards a future brimming with possibilities for those seeking immersive experiences.
